he phrase ‘best-kept secret’ is
probably ironically overused so
much that there aren’t too many
of those kind of secrets left in
this modern world of endlessly
easy-to-access information. But
with the Portuguese hunting and
shooting market, we may have
a genuine contender for one of
those secrets that is best kept.
It’s not top of most hunters’
bucket lists but it offers some
varied and engaging sport that
has helped to build a strong, if not
slightly modest, market.
The likely contender for
number one game in the country
is red-legged partridge – a
bird that’s plentiful in not only
Portugal but France, Spain and
even the United Kingdom.
Portugal is one of this bird’s
natural homelands, though,
and you will find them in
large numbers here, set among
extremely pleasant valleys and
rolling hills of the very underrated
Portuguese countryside. Much
partridge hunting is conducted in
the form of driven hunts or using
gun dogs, so you can therefore
expect a strong market for
shotguns, shotgun ammunition
and assorted accessories
associated with this type of
hunting – camouflage, shooting
glasses, shooting vests and the
like. Away from game birds,
there are also plenty of stalking
opportunities in Portugal for
large, more prized game. Red deer
roam the forests, scrubland and
hillsides as well as roe deer, fallow
deer, the magnificent ibex and
even wild boar. There’s also fallow
deer and mouflon.
This opens up opportunities for
those producers of high powered
rifles, spotting scopes, hides,
shooting chairs and other stalking
equipment.

for bow hunting – Portugal was
