Fashion is big business
around the world and
especially in the sports
markets where Nike and
Adidas dominate high street
stores. But in niche markets
such as angling, it has its
very own top brands and
labels that cater for everyone
in the sport regardless of
the angler’s budget. More
and more tackle shops are
complimenting their rod and
reel displays with valuable
retail space given over to
angling apparel such is the
demand from its customers.
Anglers love to feel part
of a club so will have no
problem in spending money
on a jacket, t-shirt or hoodie
sporting their favourite
tackle brand logo on it. The
item will not just be worn
while fi shing either; they will
be worn around the house,
while out shopping and
even at the pub. These guys
are anglers and they want
everyone else to know it too.
Of course, there is a
functional and technical
side to outdoor clothing,
especially within the
angling arena. Anglers
generally spend a lot of
time out on the water and,
depending on where you
live or fi sh, your angling
attire needs to protect
you from the elements.
I’m talking about extreme
wet weather, blazing hot
sunshine, wild winds and
Baltic temperatures. All
these factors are a serious
consideration for clothing
manufacturers and to get it
right and to be better than
the rest, large investments

into fabric technology and
materials need to be made.
One such fabric that
has stood the test of time
and is now widely used
in manufacture is Gore-
Tex. This was invented
back in 1969 with its
primary objective being to
repel liquid water while
allowing water vapour
to pass through i.e being
breathable. It’s not a cheap
fabric and you know that
any garment carrying the
Gore-Tex logo or label
is a quality item. Saying
that though, there are a
number of very successful
and respected brands that
don’t use Gore-Tex which
have managed to develop
their own unique technical
specifi cation protecting the
angler effectively against
all manner of weather
conditions.
