Fishing worth more
than $125 billion to US
economy... and growing
Tackle sales alone were worth almost $50 billion in the past year.
The number of people
going fi shing in the
USA continues to rise
and tackle sales are
on the up, currently worth
almost $50 billion in the
past year.
According to the 2018
Sport Fishing in America
survey – which has just
been released – the sport
now supports more than
800,000 jobs and generates
$38 billion in wages and $16
billion in federal, state and
local taxes.
Indeed, since 2011, the
million of anglers’ dollars
to state fi sh and wildlife
conservation and recreation
programs in 2016.

this nation’s economy. Just
by enjoying a day on the
water, men, women and
children across the United
States pump billions of
dollars into this country’s

America’s anglers are the
nation’s most powerful
force for conserving our
nation’s fi sheries and
waters, investing more
than $1 billion dollars in
fi sheries management and
conservation through taxes
on fi shing equipment and
state fi shing license sales.”

while fi shing equipment
sales have risen by more
than 21 per cent.
Angling has a huge
infl uence not just on the
economy – where it supports
businesses from tackle and
boat manufacturing and
sales to travel, hospitality,
publications and digital
channels – but also on fi sh,
other wildlife and habitat
protection.
In fact the report,
produced for the industry
trade body the American
Sportfi shing Association
(ASA), is fully titled 2018
Sport fi shing in America:
An Economic Force for
Conservation.
The statistics have been
compiled by Southwick
Associates, which specialises
in providing the outdoor
industries with sound
market research and
analysis.
Substantially more than
any other groups, anglers
support the nation’s
conservation efforts through
the Sport Fish Restoration
and Boating Trust Fund
Program.
