angling licence is required for fi shing in

THE MARKET
Estimated angler numbers in Spain are
around the 1.5 million mark with 80 per
cent counting themselves as saltwater
anglers while the remaining 20 per cent
are fi sh in fresh water. The Spanish
recreational angling market contributes
around €200 million directly to the
economy and more than €3 billion
indirectly. Angler spend per annum is
estimated on average at €130 (retail).
BIG ISSUES
Currently, in Spain, some of its biggest
problems mirror those of other
neighbouring countries which are the
legalities imposed upon recreational
anglers. Small quotas, limitations and,
more recently, the non-native fi sh
law which is under review, have all
contributed to a reduction in the size of
Spain’s freshwater market. The Spanish
angling associations are working on
plans to limit these issues.
BREAKDOWN OF ANGLING DISCIPLINES
Spain has a variety of angling
disciplines that appeal to its
recreational angler. Among its many
styles are surfcasting, saltwater
spinning, shore fi shing, boat fi shing and
fi shing for black bass, carp and catfi sh.
MAIN TYPES OF TACKLE SOLD
Rods and reels make up the majority of
all tackle sales with a 35 per cent share.
Terminal tackle / accessories sales are
around the 20 per cent mark along with
live bait sales at 20 per cent too. The
lure market is slightly behind with 15
per cent share with line contributing to
just 10 per cent of annual sales.

distribution of sport fi shing materials in
Spain and with a presence in more than
40 countries.
Its catalogue, with more than
