WELCOME | SEPTEMBER
The last few months
have been pretty busy
what with travelling all
over the place joining
the thousands of visitors
at the EFTTEX, ICAST and
IFTD industry shows. I’ve
seen so many new products
from both the European
and U.S markets that it’s
encouraging to see that
companies are not standing
still. While there have been
a number of innovations
the majority of products are
pretty much improvements
or re-designs of existing
items yet some of the
differences are massive. Ok,
04 www.tackletradeworld.com
disciplines there are and
more seem to be cropping
up regularly but just
think how many different
products are used in each
niche. Is there a certain
trend in a country where
your products could be
needed, if not, how about
starting a trend in that
country and dominating
that niche? Easier said than
done, I know, but possible.
On the fl ip side of this,
there were a number of
exhibitors at EFTTEX from
North America who feature
in this month’s issue. Some
are veteran attendees of
the event while some were
fi rst time exhibitors. These
guys have done the leg work
and identifi ed that their
products can cross over
into other angling styles in
other countries. Some have
set up European divisions
and manufacturing
facilities to ensure supply
is no issue and others have
forged relationships with
distributors to promote and
sell in that area. The bottom
line is that they all share
the same goals, and that
is to attract distributors,
increase current export
percentage, create brand
awareness into other
markets and ultimately
expand the business.
Identifying overseas
markets is fundamental in
expanding existing business
however what’s also equally
important is fi nding the
correct distributor for your
products as they’ll tell you
in the feature.
While I was at ICAST,
I attended the Best of
Category awards ceremony
where just before the
awards were presented an
important announcement
was made by the American
Sportfi shing (ASA) President,
Glenn Hughes, that the
Modernizing Recreational
Fisheries Management Act
2017 was fi nally passed. This
is a historic passing and
one that I’m pleased to see
happen for the greater good
of the American recreational
fi shing industry. I don’t
believe for one second that
it’s been an easy road to
get there especially when
you look at how close the
fi nal vote was (222 to 193)
however it just shows that
with the lobbying efforts
and the togetherness of the
industry critical issues such
as this can be dealt with
and thereby achieving the
right result.

I get the fact that products
have been designed for a
domestic market and rightly
so, but it was great to see
products from different
countries and looking at
them thinking that they
could have a use in other
geographical territories.
One of the biggest factors
that play a part in ensuring
a product is going to be
successful is demand for it,
but in order for there to be
a demand there needs to
be a trend or discipline that
will support the products.
We all know just how many
different angling styles and
