Like it was yesterday, I
vividly recall my Marine Corps
marksmanship qualifi cation
in bootcamp. Primary
Marksmanship Instructors
(PMIs) were a tad nicer than
drill instructors – the worst of the
shouting we generally endured
under qualifying pressure was
usually: “Which one of you
maggots just shot target 27?”
Fortunately, it wasn’t me. Th at
said, hitting black at 500 metres
with iron sights was not a simple
task, given what the Marine
Corps expected from a M16-A2
delivering, roughly, 3-MOA
accuracy. Th ank God for solid
precision shooting fundamentals!
Breathe, Relax, Aim, Stop,
Squeeze – BRASS as we
Leathernecks called it – was
generally foundational to
achieving Rifl e Expert on qual
day since the 500-line was the
make-or-break distance. Over
eight years of service (and six rifl e
qualifi cations), I generally already
had a qualifying score when we
moved from 300 to 500 metresthe
real work for crossed rifl es
and another award bar came at
long range.
While it has been many years
since rifl e badges mattered to me
at all, I still enjoy shooting at long
and even extreme ranges where
500 yards is little more than a
chip shot – 1,000 and even up to
2,000 yards. Of course, I’m a lot
older, a tad wiser and even a bit
challenged now when it comes
to eyesight. To say I’ve come to
recognise the value of premium
optics is an understatement.
Today’s long-range mounted
optics, like Sightmark’s new lineup
of Latitude, are a game-changer
when it comes to next-level
shooting, delivering big on
performance from up close to a
mile out, and then some, without
forcing an ageing US Marine into
the poor house.
