Shopify
Restrictions
Almost every month it seems as if
I’m talking about another sanction
that restricts our industry’s ability
to do business, and this month is no
diff erent.
As you’ll have read on page three, the
large Canadian-based e-commerce site
Shopify has banned the sale of a selected
number of guns and related products
from its website. Th ese include semiautomatic
guns taking 10 or more bullets,
attachments like bump stocks and 3D
printed guns.
I tend to agree with the decision
regarding bump stocks and 3D guns,
but by banning many AR-15s, which are
perfectly legal in America, the company
is walking down a political path of
uncertainty.
“Solely deferring to the law, in this
age of political gridlock, is too idealistic
and functionally unworkable on the
fast-moving internet,” says Shopify chief
executive offi cer Tobi Lutke.
I don’t agree with this and feel that
companies should respect the law of the
country they do business with. It looks
like a political decision to me and one
that is furthering the company’s own
agenda. Th is decision will impact on
many companies and may even put some
of them out of business altogether.
Florida-based Spike Tactical solely
uses Shopify for its online business, with
revenue exceeding one million dollars per
year through the site. Its main product
line are AR-15s and their associated
products.
Also, the way that Shopify has notifi ed
these traders is appalling - I’m told they
received a very brief e-mail and no time
scale or prewarning.
At the time of writing Shopify’s traded
shares are down by two per cent…
Have a great trading month.
