Anglers demand:
What's in our bait?
What's in the mix?
The vast majority of
anglers are basing
their bait-buying
decisions on the
quality and sustainability
of ingredients, according to
a groundbreaking survey
that TTW has been given
full and exclusive access
to.
Although the survey
by industry specialist
fi sh21 on Angling Baits
and Sustainability was
conducted throughout the
UK, the research attracted
responses from across
also having a say. With
this in mind, should the
bait industry be more
transparent on what exactly
is in its bait products?
Certainly, consumers in
the UK believe so, voicing
some strong views about
the importance of quality
ingredients from trust and
sustainable sources.
RESPONSIBLY SOURCED
INGREDIENTS
Of the 405 surveyed anglers,
82 per cent stated that
bait producers should
use responsibly sourced
ingredients such as
sustainable seafood, from a
certifi ed sustainable fi shery.
More concerns were
voiced regarding the impact
that the sourcing of Krill and
fi sh oils as ingredients could
have on marine ecosystems,
as well the need for more
sustainable practices for
farmed baits.
Many felt that responsibly
sourced ingredients were a
necessary part of the angling
trades’ sustainability ‘duty’
and that this, coupled with
industry regulation could
lead to price increases.
However, there was a clear
difference of opinion on
whether ingredients needed
to be ‘food-grade’ or not.

42,300 tonnes annually –
who voiced most concerns,
