FaAs an angler myself, I
can’t imagine anything
more annoying than not
having the correct items
of luggage in which to carry
my tackle to and from the
bank. I see that the majority
of tackle manufacturers
incorporate a line of luggage
for its consumers and
for good reason too. The
reasoning is twofold in
that by having rod holdalls,
tackle bags, sling bags, net
bags and every other kind
of bag with a company
logo on it is a great way of
advertising. Again, anglers
are being invited to join the
“club” however there is also
a key factor that needs to
be considered and that is
functionality. Some brands
buy off the shelf, apply the
company logo and try to
sell it to consumers while
others brands carefully think
about what it is that an

angler will fi nd functional.
It’s important that anglers
can fi sh effi ciently and have
all their tackle stowed away
securely, away from the
elements yet, can access
anything at a moment’s
notice. All these features
combined create the best
and most sought after
items.
QUALITY
Quality is another
important area too. There’s
no point manufacturing
or selling an item of
luggage that’s not up to the
rigours of harsh outdoor
terrain, insanely hot
temperatures or cold and
wet environments because
it just won’t last. Zips have
to be durable; the material
ideally needs to waterproof
or at least water resistant.
The straps, clips and
handles need to be tough,
strong and adjustable while
internal pockets should be
plentiful.
PROTECTION
Reinforced luggage is
something to look out for
too. Anglers are carrying
expensive rod and reel
combo’s ready made up
to enable quick fi shing
however without protected
gear anglers run a gauntlet
of hazards risking untold
damage to tackle. Make sure
that before or during the sale
of expensive carbon items
that anglers have the proper
protective luggage to go with
it.
STYLE AND DESIGN
Of course, anglers don’t just
want quality and functional
items, they want to look
the part too. Remember
the “being part of the club”
feeling that anglers want.
Yes, these brand loyal anglers
will buy matching luggage
from the same brand as their
main tackle items, so it’s
worth sourcing the luggage
that complements your main
stock. A lot has changed with
regards to angling luggage
with so many different
colour ways, designs and
sizes now available it can
be a bit daunting as what
to stock however my advice
to retailers is to keep it
functional, compact and
relative to your target
market. You know better
than anyone what kind of
fi shing your customers are
into and certainly you know
what products belonging to
which brands are being sold.
