European cormorant
cooperation needed
Leading European angling groups have called for a coordinated
plan to manage the cormorant population –
which has devastated fi sh stocks – across the continent.
The call came during an event entitled “Cormorant:
management needed across the borders”, which was
organised by the Forum on Recreational Fisheries and
Aquatic Environment, supported by the European Anglers
Alliance (EAA) and the European Fishing Tackle Trade
Association (EFTTA).
Chaired by two MEPs, the event last month (October)
looked at the issues surrounding these birds, whose
population has vastly increased since the 1980s and
has been blamed for massive reductions in fi sh stocks
throughout Europe. Currently, cormorants are managed
at a local level, often by scaring away the bird but this
often just pushes the problem from one area to another.
Olaf Linder, from the Deutscher Angelfi scherverband and
Markus Lundgren from SportFiskarna stressed the need
to ensure a good balance between protection of fi sh, birds,
biodiversity and fi sheries. During a lively debate involving
MEPs, member state representatives, the European
Commission, the European Federation for Hunting and
Conservation (FACE) and other bodies, the EAA and
EFTTA made the call for major management plan, as the
European Parliament had done a 10 years ago.
