Scotland’s trophy hunting industry takes double blow

detriment to Scotland’s iconic status as a
field sports destination of choice for many
people around the world.”
“I think this issue really must be sorted,”
she told the Herald on Sunday. “To the best
of my knowledge in the history of passenger
aviation, there has not been an incident
involving a recreational shooter and their
shotgun or rifle.
“The feeling amongst my continental
business associates is one of nervousness.”
Richardson said there is a “certain kudos”
associated with shooting in Scotland.
“Be it our unique driven and walked-up
grouse shooting, traditional open hill red stag
stalk with pony retrieve or winkling a fresh
run salmon from a Highland river; each year,
foreign visitors arrive in their thousands,” she
said.
Currently hunting bodies in the UK are
working hard to change this decision but at
the time of going to print the ban remains.
Larysa Switlyk has received death threats
following the posting of images of a goat
that she shot in the Scottish Hebrideans.
Although perfectly legal and part of a
licenced cull the images have caused uproar
on social media and many of the UK’s
national newspapers have taken up the story,
further fuelling anti-hunting groups calling
for the banning of these types of hunts.
The image and subsequent Twitter
reaction even prompted the First Minister of
Scotland and leader of the Scottish National
Party, Nicola Sturgeon to say this:
“Totally understandable why the images
from Islay of dead animals being held up
as trophies is so upsetting and offensive to
people. @scotgov will review the current
situation and consider whether changes to
the law are required.”
Garry Doolan, BASC’s deputy director
of communications and public affairs, said:
“By choosing to use social media to tell the
word about her exploits hunting goats and
other animals on the small Scottish island of
Islay, (Larysa) has found herself thrust onto
the news pages of... a host of other papers
and websites. And it doesn’t make pleasant
reading.
“All our hard work and good intentions
can be undone in an instant on social media.
“It has the power to educate and inform.
It also has the power to alienate vast swathes
of the population, the very people we need to
get onside - and keep onside - if shooting is
to survive the challenges ahead.”
