Let’s wise up on
social media
I have to agree with the British Association
for Shooting and Conservation (BASC)
when it recently commented on the story
regarding American TV personality Larysa
Switlyk and her posting of photographs
of goats she had shot in the Scottish
Hebrideans.
e reaction to these photos, showing
Larysa posing with the goats, has caused
outrage in British newspapers and she has
received death threats. e goats have no
natural predators on the island and cause
huge amounts of damage, so culling has been
going on there for years but this glorifying of
the cull isn’t helping our industry.
In countries like America ,where the
hunting industry is strong and there is no
threat of a ban or heavy restrictions, these
images are okat. In other nations where our
industry has a less stable footing, images
like these only add fuel to the re for
anti-hunting groups to lobby for bans and
restrictions.
When sensitive photos are posted onto
social media, where anyone can see them, we
are asking for trouble. e reaction from the
public who oppose hunting and, in particular
these ‘trophy shots’, is often in high numbers
and can regularly, like in this case, cause a
government to act.
Countries have di erent cultures and
the trophy shot isn’t as accepted in the UK
as it is over in America. We really do need
to be careful and also educated about the
culture of where we are shooting and the
implications of what we post to social media,
particularly if we are in the public eye.

it up perfectly when he commented: “All
our hard work and good intentions can be
undone in an instant on social media. It has
the power to educate and inform. It also has
the power to alienate vast swathes of the
population, the very people we need to get
onside - and keep onside - if shooting is to
survive the challenges ahead.”
